Condition vs. carbon in pavement networks

Is the best-maintained network also the greenest? Not necessarily (MASc research).

In my MASc, I developed a Monte Carlo, two-stage bottom-up model that learns facility-level maintenance policies and allocates a network budget to either maximize the state of good repair or minimize global warming potential (GWP).

Results from a network-level case study:

  • maximizing network condition raises expected GWP by 1–8% over 20 years;
  • shifting funds from reconstruction to rehabilitation improves condition by up to 25% and cuts GWP by up to 7%.
